We had a wonderful birthday with our daddy the Saturday after he came home
(after being away a month) in September. It was perfect that his birthday landed on a Saturday since the kids rarely see him during the week, so we had to make this a big deal!
The day began opening presents (the impatient sort do this sort of thing first thing in the morning). I was excited I actually surprised him with some piano music written by Jon Schmidt that he's wanted. Yes!
I have to backtrack and tell you about decorating the day before the big day. I came in to find Ryan with a permanent red marker drawing our family and his name (his two favorite things to draw) on the balloons I blew up.
Before you think "what a stinker" (although he definitely has his moments) please note that I have often drawn funny faces on balloons for their birthdays, so he was just helping with the decorating.
Luckily the red marker only got on the balloons, so all was just ducky.
So, back to birthday day, we had a yummy breakfast, took it easy and got everything together to go out for the day. First of....what else? Lunch! We had to stay true to Soulier tradition and celebrate with our favorite thing in the world....food.

Hogi Yogi hit the spot, and we had to go while we live in Utah! Rob and I use to go there all the time when we were dating...so we get a little sappy while eating vanilla yogurt and raspberries.
Check out Ellie's Root beer face! I love it!
Then, Ellie and Ryan had their first soccer game, so we headed to Marv Jensen Fields for a little exercise.
They got to be on the same team, one of the perks of having kids a year apart.
We wanted things to look forward to doing with dad when he got home, so all month we'd been telling the kids we would take them miniature golfing, and today was the day!

They had fun, and the best part were Ryan's victory dances.
The day ended with our parents over for cake (I love making a yummy birthday cake. This one was Ribbon Fudge Cake. Yeah, It's a party in your mouth).

Then Grandma Soulier babysat while Birthday boy and his girl got to double with Brian (Rob's little brother) to Sundance to the Peter Breinholt Concert. It was wonderful to be in the mountains in the fall, and the concert was great.
(We forgot our camera, so sorry Britt, I didn't get the picture of me head banging in front of the crowd. But, we did have a moment of silence for you.)
It was such a sweet day, and after being apart so much this year, I don't think I'll ever take for granted the simple joy of just being a family.
